Fire resistant paint – it’s a burning issue

Bonfire Night is almost upon us and I found myself thinking about fire and things associated with it.

Bonfire Night Thermoguard

Bonfire Night

Now I love standing outside in the cold saying ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ at coloured pyrotechnics as much as the next person, enjoying the delight on my children’s faces (even if that’s more because of the hotdog in their hands than the fireworks), but when it comes to Tools-paint.com we’re verging on being the anti-Bonfire Night people.

Let me explain.

Over the weeks or months leading to the 5th of November you amass a pile of wood and try desperately to keep it dry so that when the big day comes one spark turns it into a towering inferno.

Tools-paint.com on the other hand, sells a range of fire retardant paints which are specially formulated to slow down the speed at which fire spreads and minimise the amount and toxicity of the smoke and fumes. Thermoguard is one of the leading brands in this field and they have some remarkable products.

The coatings generally work by expanding once exposed to fire, creating a layer which protects the wood substrate from the blaze. They are known as intumescent coatings.

Thermocoat W 5kg

Thermocoat W

These include Thermocoat W and high build metal primer for steel and cast iron, as well as Timbercoat, Dualcoat, Fire Varnish and Thermoproof, which are designed for internal or external wood.

For walls and ceilings there is Wallcoat and Flame Retardant Anti-Graffiti Bond and there is even the self-explanatory Thermoguard Asbestos Encapsulating Coating.

Thermoguard Fire Varnish

Thermoguard Fire Varnish Overcoat

These combine to produce an incredible fire resistant coating to which can be added a variety of specialist topcoats – in the colour of your choice – to give the finish you require.

Of course, if you’re in charge of the fire on Bonfire Night, it goes without saying not to use wood coated with Thermoguard products – you’ll still be there long after the kids and the hotdogs have gone cold!

DIY painting tips

We’ve all been there, haven’t we?

You search Google for an answer to a question you need answering and you click on three or four websites that look promising.

Perhaps you don’t find the answer you like but there’s a link on the new page that seems likely to take you to that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, so you click on that too.

Before you know it an hour’s passed, you have 20 tabs open in your browser full of possibilities and related articles which don’t necessarily have the solution to the original question, but you’ve had a good read (and you probably have a whole host of new questions).

So it was that I found myself writing about the Dulux Colour of the Year 2017 (see blog post here) and I was hunting for information and pictures on Denim Drift, and getting some straight answers was surprisingly difficult.

Tin foil paint tray

Save time cleaning up with a tin foil lined paint tray

What I did come across during that search was an excellent blog by interior stylist Lucy Gough and she listed a couple of painting-related nuggets I thought were worth sharing with you.

The first is a great little time saving tip which is especially useful if you’re using several different colours and in small amounts.

Rubber band paint tin

Wipe off excess paint on an elastic band

Line your 4in paint tray (other sizes are available – see here!) with tin foil before you pour in the paint and when you’re done you can simply throw away the foil and there’s no need to wash up the tray.

The other is to wrap a large rubber band vertically around your open paint tin and wipe your brush against the rubber band to remove excess paint. It means you avoid getting drips all down the side of the tin and you have a handy place to rest your brush when needed too. The picture is of Cuprinol Garden Shades in Warm Foliage, custom mixed in our mixing room.

I never did find the Denim Drift answer I was looking for but I guess it wasn’t time entirely wasted. I’ll try again sometime and no doubt end up with another 30 tabs open.

Or is it just me?

Shakin’ and stirred: Dulux reveal Denim Drift as their Colour of the Year 2017… and a lot more besides

It appears Dulux are pretty good when it comes to predicting the future.

No sooner did they reveal their Colour of the Year for 2017 to be Denim Drift, evoking all those Eighties memories with those white T-shirt and denim jeans/jacket combos and Nick Kamen’s iconic Levi’s TV ad, than another stalwart of the era reappears.

Shakin Stevens

Denim icon

Yes, the one and only Shakin’ Stevens is back with a new album, Echoes of Our Time, from which the current single Last Man Alive is taken (you’d never guess it was Shaky singing on it).

For each of the past 14 years Dulux has gathered a team of global independent design experts who examine social, economic and design trends and use their colour expertise to come up with the Colour Futures collection.

Essentially they look at how and where people live across the world, what materials and finishes they use, the best-selling colours and global interior decorating and architecture, to work out which colours will appeal to you and I (and hopefully the other seven billion people on the planet).

The conclusion of the experts this time was one overall theme of ‘things that make life worth living’ summed up by Dulux Denim Drift, plus nine other main colours and 35 complementary ones, which together make up the Dulux Colour of the Year 2017 palette.

Dulux Denim Drift is a blue-grey shade chosen because it reflects the need for simple, restful colours we can all understand and recognise – blue being the colour of the sky and water – while it’s also soothing and versatile enough to be both classic and contemporary.

And possibly because we all have at least one pair of blue jeans – Neil Diamond’s forever in his, don’t you know.

“The colour of the year palette is a collection of 10 delicious blues made up of five smoky, muted and atmospheric shades and five clean and bright shades which complement each other perfectly,” says Marianne Shillingford, Dulux creative director. “They are designed to be used individually or across different elements of a room with the muted shades creating a tranquil classic look whilst the cleaner colours add a blast of freshness.

Denim Drift palette“This palette is so versatile, it’s almost impossible to create something you won’t like.”

Just like Shaky in his heyday (33 hit singles, would you believe?)!

It’s all starting to fall into place – maybe Dulux has been playing the long game and Shakin’ Stevens has been ‘their man’ since the very start, releasing highly emulsional (sorry about that) music on the unsuspecting masses to get us all decorating with Dulux.

The evidence is there… “This ole house is getting feeble, this ole house is a needing paint”.

I guess he struggled to get “This ole house needs some Dulux Endurance+, while some Weathershield Textured Masonry paint wouldn’t go amiss”, to scan.

It certainly throws new light on what’s behind the green door. That secret it’s been keeping since 1981 could be that he’s an undercover Dulux agent, or perhaps it’s just that it was painted in Fortune Green, one of the Dulux Colour of the Year 2017 complementary colours. Playing the long game indeed.

So after Katarina Johnson-Thompson in 2016, how about the face of the Dulux Colour of the Year 2017 being Cardiff’s Michael Barratt, better known as Shakin’ Stevens?

You heard it here first!

Paint mixing down to a fine art

Those of you of a certain age will remember fondly Tony Hart and his BBC TV show Take Hart, which was broadcast from 1977 to 1983, as well as its other incarnations. Chas and Morph were the (plasticine) bee’s knees.

Anyone for plum pudding?

For those somewhat younger, or with small children today, it was in a similar mold to the likes of Mister Maker – a show to inspire youngsters to take up painting and other hands-on art.

Well we at tools-paint.com have our own paint expert called Tony – Tony Wood – who takes care of our bespoke mixing in our in-house machine.

With a drop of this and a dash of that Tony can produce just about any paint colour you could ever wish for, whether you need it to match your classic Land Rover or you simply desire something a little different to Dulux Endurance+ in Pure Brilliant White.

Spreading a little love

And occasionally he comes up with his own temporary little masterpieces when adding tints to the base colours (ok, he admits it’s completely random!).

We thought we’d share some of them with you now. Here’s Tony’s first gallery (cue that vibraphone music)…

The 12 Tools-paint Days of Christmas

The 12 Days of Christmas is a Christian season which begins with the birth of Jesus and ends on Twelfth Night (January 5).

In England in the Middle Ages it was a time of continuous feasting and merrymaking when people held big parties, often reversing the roles in society so that servants were served by their masters.

Twelfth Night traditionally marked the ‘end of winter’ which began on October 31 with All Hallows Eve (Halloween).

Of course, The 12 Days of Christmas is also a song. Here’s our tools-paint version.

Cherished Gold or 50 Shades of Grey?

Dulux colour of the year 2016

Drum roll please – Dulux has revealed that Cherished Gold will be its Colour of the Year for 2016.

I know, I know, it’s the news we’ve all been waiting for. After all, it’s “Still bright enough to attract attention while also subtly referring to the past and the colour of the earth, it also combines well with other tones”, according to the press release at https://www.dulux.co.uk/en/articles/colour-of-the-year-2016-cherished-gold.

How have you being getting through life without knowing that?

My first thoughts were, ‘How do you choose a colour of the year and who’s on the selection panel?’

I have visions of a group of people – perhaps paint technicians, housewives, marketing folk (of course) and maybe a warehouse manager (to tell them he’s got gallons of something or other to shift) – sitting around discussing 50 shades of grey.

I really hoped that was the case, but sadly not. Apparently, and possibly thankfully, it’s a bit more scientific than that.

The panel is actually made up of colour and trend experts (yet another job that was never an option when I was at school – my careers advisor suggested I become a tank commander) who scour the globe looking at different cultures and industries.

We are told: “In identifying a colour that would connect with the overall trend of lookingDulux colour of the year 2016 both ways, we noted that all the key trends for 2016 had an element of gold in them. It’s the ‘golden hour’ of Dark and Light (maybe that’s where the 50 shades could fit in); it’s the gold that appears in Heritage and Future – both in the paintings of old masters and also in modern design trends.”

And the press release continues: “Out of the broad palette of yellows we identified, we have carefully selected the one yellow that best represents the golden influence of the coming year’s colour trends. We nominated a golden yellow, which has been translated into an almost ochre colour; still bright enough to attract attention while also subtly referring to past and the colour of the earth, combining well with other tones.”

So there you have it. The one conclusion we can safely draw is that there was definitely a marketing person on the selection panel.

Research showed that ‘gold and gold tones were being used everywhere in the design world’ and that ‘it is a recurring colour at design fairs and in graphic design as well as in architecture, fashion, beauty and interior decorating’.

Dulux colour of the year 2016And the panel concluded: “We feel that this is a beautiful next step, a natural evolution and transition from the coppery orange that was the Colour of the Year for 2015.”

In a nutshell, this year’s Dulux Colour of the Year was orange and next year will be yellow. Anyone who knows their rainbow could tell you it will be green the year after that, so perhaps it’s not that scientific after all.

Or maybe that old favourite magnolia will get a look in. The meeting would be a lot shorter if nothing else – and that warehouse manager is bound to have pots of the stuff to get rid of!

Anyway, if you’re sold on the Gold go to tools-paint.com for options.

Don’t leave it till autumn leaves

The first major downpour of the season immediately highlighted the first item on my list of jobs to do before winter comes.

I arrived home and dashed out of the rain but not before I could see, or more appropriately hear, water cascading over the gutter.

I have a perennial battle with sycamore seeds from a neighbour’s garden, although fortunately it’s nowhere near as bad as in this picture.

Fortunately a few better days followed and I was able to get up there when the leaf and moss debris had dried somewhat, so scooping it out just wearing gloves such as these was pretty straightforward.

We have plenty of other options here including Polyco Mad Grip gloves if you want something more heavy duty. That’s as close as I’m likely to get to being a Tough Mudder!

Clearing the debris may be all that’s needed, but you should check the brackets in case one has come undone or broken, or perhaps the gutter needs repositioning (a fall of 1cm for every 3.5m length should be sufficient).

Other possibilities include a cracked gutter or joint – either brave the rain while you get a closer look or run some water along the length to see where the problem lies.

You may have no option but to replace the gutter section but there are some excellent products available to make fairly major repairs. These include Rust-Oleum LeakSeal which comes in an aerosol and is good for repairing cracks.

If you need something more heavy duty, especially if immediate action is needed because water is coming into your house, Rust-Oleum Fillcoat Fibres will plug cracks and even holes, and can even be applied underwater if necessary.

Test the final results by running water from a hosepipe along the gutter. While you’re up the ladder you should check for any broken or missing roof tiles too.

If your fascia has seen better days or you fancy giving your home a new look http://www.tools-paint.com/ekmps/shops/avenueonline/images/combicolor-multi-surface-gloss-paint-2.5l-46607-p.pngyou may like to investigate Dulux Weathershield Multi-surface, which can be applied to uPVC, wood and metal, or Rust-Oleum’s new CombiColor Multi-surface, which will work on all those plus MDF, masonry, tiles, most rigid plastics including PVC, old concrete and aged galvanized steel.

Other jobs that can be done at this time of year include pressure washing the patio and paths, perhaps using a cleaner too if they have a habit of becoming slippery.

You could also have a look around to see if there’s anywhere that cold air can creep indoors, particularly around the edges of doors and windows or where pipes and vents come through the wall. Polycell Multi Purpose Exterior may do the job.

And don’t forget to treat your timber – although that’s a subject for another time.

For expert advice on any of these products call 01753 686888.
